⚠️Note: This Itinerary is too compressed for a true 4-day trip if you want to do all three regions well. Day 1 — Arrive Hanoi → Old Quarter Base

Noi Bai Airport → Old Quarter

• Noi Bai International Airport (HAN) is approximately 45 km north of the Old Quarter. Grab is your best option.
• Grab car from HAN to Old Quarter: approximately VND 230,000–280,000 (~₱560–680). Travel time: 40–50 minutes in light traffic. Open Grab on airport WiFi before stepping outside.
• Metered taxi fallback: Use Mai Linh (green) or Vinasun (white with green stripe) — both are reputable metered operators available at the official taxi rank outside arrivals. Do not enter unmarked vehicles.

Your Hanoi Base: Old Quarter

Evening — Hoan Kiem Lake + Bia Hoi Corner

• Walk 5 minutes south from the Old Quarter to Hoan Kiem Lake. The lake is known as the “Lake of the Restored Sword” from a legend about Emperor Ly Thai To. It’s a popular spot for locals, especially in the early morning and late afternoon when you’ll see people practicing tai chi, jogging, or enjoying a peaceful walk.
• Cross the red Huc Bridge to Ngoc Son Temple (VND 30,000 / ~₱75, open 8 AM–6 PM). Walk the lake perimeter (approximately 20 minutes full loop). On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings, roads around the lake are closed to vehicles and become a pedestrian zone — the best time to visit.
• After the lake, walk 10 minutes north to Ta Hien Street (Bia Hoi Corner). Bia Hoi is a fresh draft lager brewed daily, matured briefly, and delivered to beer houses via motorbike. A glass costs less than 50 cents and is a cultural ritual as much as a drink. Sit on a plastic stool, order Bia Hoi, watch the street.

Day 2 — Ha Long Bay Day Cruise (Return Same Day)

Critical Planning Point

This requires an overnight cruise or a very long day. A day trip is a good way to go if you’re pressed for time or on a tight budget. However, it is a tightly packed schedule that starts early, finishes late, and involves spending about 6 hours or more on the road. For 4D3N, a well-managed day cruise is the realistic option — but you should expect to leave early and return late.

Step 1 — Shuttle Pickup

• Standard shuttle buses pick up from hotel locations in the Old Quarter between 7:45 and 8:15 AM, arriving at Ha Long Bay by 11:30 AM. Luxury limousines depart every hour starting from 5:00 AM, offering a more flexible schedule.
• Be at your hotel lobby at 7:30 AM. The shuttle will come to you if you booked with hotel pickup included.
• The price of Hanoi to Ha Long Bay shuttle bus services ranges from USD 12 to 20 per person one way. Round-trip prices range from USD 20 to 30. Book round-trip — it’s cheaper and locks in your return seat.
• Travel time: On the modern expressway, travel time is usually 2.5–3.5 hours door-to-door, including a short rest stop.

Step 2 — Boarding at Tuan Chau Marina

• Most cruise packages include shuttle transfer from Hanoi’s Old Quarter directly to Tuan Chau Marina, which is the main cruise hub for Ha Long Bay, Bai Tu Long Bay, and Lan Ha Bay.

⚠️ Critical: When you enter Tuan Chau Marina, walk to the LEFT to the main booking counters. A reviewer with direct experience warns: “Do NOT book from the stand on the right — they quoted us ridiculously inflated prices. Walk in the entrance, turn left and book from there.” Normal boat price for the standard day cruise is in the range of 510,000 VND (~₱1,240) and above.

If your cruise is pre-booked: Proceed directly to your operator’s boarding gate.

On the Cruise

A standard Ha Long Bay day cruise includes: limestone karst sailing, cave visit (typically Sung Sot / Surprise Cave), kayaking through formations, swimming stop, and lunch onboard. Day-boat or cruise fees depend on route and inclusions. Confirm pier and boarding time 24 hours ahead.

⚠️ Weather: Weather can change — operators may adjust routes for safety. December through February can be cold and misty. June through August is hot but can have storms. Confirm the day before departure.

Return

• Shuttle departs Ha Long Bay approximately 4:00–4:30 PM. Return to Old Quarter by 7:00–8:00 PM.

Morning: Noi Bai Airport Departure

• Airlines: VietJet Air (budget, check baggage fees), Vietnam Airlines (checked baggage often included in economy), Bamboo Airways (mid-range, good punctuality). Check best fares at Airpaz Global.

Da Nang Airport → Hoi An

• Grab is available at a dedicated station outside the arrivals hall at Da Nang Airport. You can pay by card or cash.
• Ride-hailing services typically cost between VND 250,000 to 400,000 (~₱610–970) for a one-way trip from Da Nang Airport to Hoi An. Travel time: about 40 to 45 minutes, depending on traffic.
• No direct train exists from Da Nang Airport to Hoi An — train stations in the area are not conveniently located for this route. Grab or private transfer is the practical option.

⚠️ Hoi An has no airport. Da Nang Airport (DAD) is the gateway for both cities.

Your Hoi An Base

• Stay inside or very close to the Ancient Town. The old town is vehicle-free and best explored on foot or bicycle.
• Budget guesthouses along Tran Phu Street and Bach Dang Street start from VND 300,000–500,000 (~₱730–1,215)/night. Mid-range homestays and boutique hotels: VND 700,000–1,500,000/night. Book via Agoda.com — many properties have flexible cancellation.

Afternoon — Hoi An Ancient Town

• The Ancient Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Entry ticket: VND 120,000 (~₱290). Covers 5 heritage sites including Japanese Covered Bridge, Assembly Halls, and Tan Ky Old House. Purchased at ticket booths at the town entrances.
• Walk the core streets: Tran Phu Street (silk shops, lanterns), Nguyen Thai Hoc Street (restaurants, cafes), Bach Dang Street (Thu Bon River waterfront). The Japanese Covered Bridge at the western end of Tran Phu is the most photographed site.

Hoi An’s best dish: Cao Lau — thick rice noodles with pork slices and local herbs, made with water from a specific well. Available at stalls throughout the market for VND 30,000–60,000. Not available anywhere else in the world.

Evening — Hoi An Night Market + Lanterns

• Walk across the pedestrian footbridge to An Hoi Peninsula — the night market opens from 5 PM. Silk goods, lanterns, hand-painted fans, and street food line both sides.
• The Thu Bon River itself glows from 6 PM onward with floating lanterns (hoa đăng). On the 14th of each lunar month (full moon), the entire town switches off electric lights and lights lanterns — if your visit coincides with this, it is one of the most atmospheric evenings in Southeast Asia. Confirm the date against the Vietnamese lunar calendar.

Day 4 — Hoi An Beach → Fly Ho Chi Minh City → HCMC / Mekong Delta

Morning — An Bang Beach (Optional)

• If your Da Nang flight is midday or later, cycle or Grab to An Bang Beach, 5 km from the Ancient Town. Quieter than Da Nang beaches. Bicycle rental: VND 50,000–100,000/day from any guesthouse. Morning swim, then return to pack.

Hoi An → Da Nang Airport → Ho Chi Minh City

• Grab from Hoi An Ancient Town to Da Nang Airport (DAD): VND 250,000–400,000 (~₱610–970), 45–60 minutes.
• Allow buffer for traffic on the coastal road.
• Flight: Da Nang (DAD) → Ho Chi Minh City / Saigon (SGN). Flight time from Da Nang to Ho Chi Minh City is approximately 55 minutes direct. Fare from approximately USD 30–70 one way depending on booking window.

Tan Son Nhat Airport (SGN) → City

• Grab from Tan Son Nhat Airport to District 1 (central HCMC): VND 100,000–150,000 (~₱240–365), 20–40 minutes.
• Grab pick-up is available at the airport — designated zone in front of arrivals.

⚠️ Traffic warning: Between 4:00–7:00 PM, the roads from Tan Son Nhat Airport to District 1 can be severely congested. If your flight lands in this window, add 30–45 minutes to your estimate.

Afternoon — War Remnants Museum

• Open Monday through Sunday, 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM. Entry fee: VND 40,000 (~₱97).
• This is Vietnam’s most visited museum and one of the most significant war history sites in Southeast Asia. Allow 2–3 hours. Content is graphic and emotionally sobering — coverage of the American War from the Vietnamese perspective, with photographs, military hardware, and documentation of Agent Orange effects. Not suitable for very young children.

Go early if landing mid-morning. Reviewers confirm arriving at 7:30 AM means no queue. By 9 AM it starts filling.

Late Afternoon — Ben Thanh Market → Bui Vien Street

• Ben Thanh Market is Saigon’s most iconic covered market. Open until approximately 6 PM. Entry free.
  • Products include coffee, dried goods, clothing, and souvenirs. Prices are tourist-inflated — negotiate everything. Counter at 25–30% of the opening ask.
• From 6 PM, Ben Thanh Night Market opens on the surrounding streets — less haggling, more food.
• Walk or Grab 5 minutes to Bui Vien Walking Street (District 1).
• Pedestrianized from 7 PM. This is Saigon’s backpacker street — neon lights, street food, cold beer, live music.
  • A complete contrast to Hanoi’s Bia Hoi corner: louder, younger, more international.

Mekong Delta — Build It Into Day 4 or Add a Day 5

If your flight from Da Nang arrives in HCMC by noon, you can still do a half-day Mekong experience. If you arrive at 2 PM or later, book the Mekong as a morning Day 5 add-on.

How the Mekong day trip works: Your adventure begins with a comfortable pickup between 7:00 and 8:00 AM from your Ho Chi Minh City hotel. You arrive in My Tho around 10:00 AM, step aboard a traditional motorboat, and cruise along the Mekong River, passing Dragon, Phoenix, and Turtle Islands. The tour continues to Ben Tre — famous for its coconut plantations — before returning to Ho Chi Minh City around 4:30–5:00 PM.

• Essential services typically included in these tours: round-trip transportation from Ho Chi Minh City, an experienced local guide, various boat rides including the hand-rowed sampan, access to local activities like coconut candy making and honey tasting, and a meal at a riverside restaurant.
• Book a small-group tour (maximum 12 people) rather than a large bus tour for a better experience. Price: approximately USD 25–50 per person depending on group size and inclusions.

What not to do: Do not attempt the Mekong independently without local knowledge — the delta’s canal network is complex and boat schedules are not publicly listed in English.

Important Things to Know Across All Three Zones

• Grab works in Hanoi, Da Nang, and Ho Chi Minh City. Register before you land. In HCMC, also consider Xanh SM (Vietnam’s electric taxi — VND 380,000 for airport to Hoi An, fixed price, no surge).

• Vietnamese Dong only at markets and street stalls. Carry small notes — VND 10,000, 20,000, 50,000. ATMs are plentiful in all three cities. Withdraw from Vietcombank or Techcombank for reliable rates.

• Bargaining is expected at markets. Ben Thanh Market, Hoi An’s tailor shops, and Hanoi’s Dong Xuan Market all price for negotiation. Opening ask is typically 2–4x the real price. Start at 25–30% of the first quote and negotiate from there.

• Domestic flights fill up quickly. Book Hanoi → Da Nang and Da Nang → Ho Chi Minh City as soon as you confirm your international arrival date. VietJet Air’s base fares do not include checked baggage — read the fare conditions before purchasing.

• Hoi An Ancient Town entry ticket. The VND 120,000 ticket is sold at official booths at town entrances — not inside. You are not required to buy the ticket to walk the streets, only to enter the specific heritage sites. Confirm which sites you want to visit before purchasing.

• Ha Long Bay cruise scam. At Tuan Chau Marina, unofficial touts approach arriving visitors with “special” packages. Walk past them. Go to the left side of the main entrance hall where licensed operators display their official prices.

• Mekong Delta tours depart early. Pickup is between 7:00 and 8:00 AM from your HCMC hotel. If your flight from Da Nang arrives late, book the Mekong for the following morning. The tour returns to HCMC by approximately 5:00 PM.
