How to Move Around Bangkok, Thailand β Transit System Guide
- Who this is for: Bangkok Thailand commute is for First-time independent travelers arriving in Bangkok who need to understand the rail, road, and water transit system before they get stuck in traffic, overcharged, or miss a connection.
- What this solves: Bangkok has one of Southeast Asia’s most complete urban transit networks β but it’s fragmented across multiple operators, multiple cards, and multiple systems that don’t always talk to each other. This guide maps it all out.

The 6 Ways to Move Around Bangkok Thailand Commute
1. BTS Skytrain β Your Primary Tool

The fastest, most tourist-friendly way to move through Bangkok’s main districts. Elevated above the traffic. Air-conditioned. Bilingual signage and announcements.
The BTS Skytrain covers over 70 kilometers with 62 stations across three lines. The Sukhumvit Line runs north-south through the city’s main tourist and business districts, the Silom Line connects the west side including the financial district, and the short Gold Line reaches ICONSIAM mall.
Operating hours: The BTS runs daily from 5:15 AM to midnight. During peak hours (7:00β9:00 AM and 5:00β7:30 PM), trains come every 2β3 minutes. Off-peak frequency is about 5β8 minutes.
Fares: A single journey ticket is 17β65 THB depending on distance. Most tourist trips fall between 25β45 THB.
Tickets β what to buy:
- Single journey token β Purchased at vending machines at every station. Cash only (coins and small notes accepted). Select destination on touchscreen. Keep your token β you insert it at the exit gate.
- One-Day Pass β 150 THB for unlimited rides until midnight. Worth it if you plan 4+ trips in a day.
- Rabbit Card β 200 THB to purchase (100 THB non-refundable card fee + 100 THB initial stored value). Top up in 100 THB increments at any BTS station, up to 4,000 THB maximum balance. Best option if you’re staying 2+ days. Tap in and tap out β no queuing for tokens.
Rabbit Card coverage: Rabbit Card is accepted on the BTS Green Line (Sukhumvit), Green Line (Silom), Gold Line, MRT Pink Line, MRT Yellow Line, BRT Bus Rapid Transit, and Chao Phraya river boats.
Critical limitation: The Rabbit Card does not work on the MRT Blue or Purple Lines, or the Airport Rail Link. For those systems, you need separate tickets.
Key hub station: Siam Station is the central interchange between the Sukhumvit and Silom lines. If you get confused, go to Siam and reorient.
2. MRT β Underground Metro
Covers areas the BTS doesn’t reach, especially the old city, Chinatown, and the Grand Palace area.
The MRT network includes the mostly underground Blue Line, the elevated Purple Line, and the monorail-style Pink Line and Yellow Line. As of 2025, the Mangmoom Card allows travel across all MRT-operated lines β but in practice, it is only available to Thai ID card holders. For foreign visitors, contactless EMV payment is the more practical option, with support at most stations for Visa, Mastercard, UnionPay, and most Thai bank cards.
For tourists: Tap in and out with your contactless Visa or Mastercard directly at MRT gates. No card purchase needed.
Key MRT Blue Line stops:
- Chatuchak Park β weekend market (connects to BTS Mo Chit)
- Sukhumvit β connects to BTS Asok
- Si Lom β connects to BTS Sala Daeng (Silom financial district)
- Hua Lamphong β near Chinatown
- Wat Mangkon β directly at Chinatown/Yaowarat
- Sanam Chai β nearest MRT stop to the Grand Palace area
New as of December 2025: The “40 THB all-day electric trains” policy has been introduced on the SRT Red Line and MRT Purple Line. Confirm this is still active on arrival.
MRT Blue Line connects with the BTS Sukhumvit Line at MRT Sukhumvit, Chatuchak Park, and Phahon Yothin stations. It connects with the BTS Silom Line at Si Lom and Bang Wa stations. It connects with the Airport Rail Link at Phetchaburi station.
3. Airport Rail Link (ARL) β Suvarnabhumi Airport
The fastest and cheapest way in from the airport. Do not take a taxi or private transfer unless your accommodation is genuinely far from the rail network.
The Airport Rail Link operates from 6:00 AM until midnight. There is a train every 10 minutes during peak hours (6β9 AM and 4β8 PM) and every 15 minutes during the rest of the day.
The ARL station is at basement level (B floor) of Suvarnabhumi Airport β a short walk from arrivals.
| Destination | Fare | Travel Time |
|---|---|---|
| Makkasan (β MRT Blue Line) | 35 THB | ~20 min |
| Phaya Thai (β BTS Sukhumvit Line) | 45 THB | ~30 min |
As of December 2025, you can tap in and out on the Airport Rail Link using your credit or debit card (actual card or mobile wallet). No need to queue at a vending machine.
From the airport to Sukhumvit/Silom/Siam area: Take ARL to Phaya Thai (45 THB), then transfer to BTS Sukhumvit Line. Total fare BKK β Siam: approximately 80β90 THB. Total time: under 45 minutes.
If your hotel is nowhere near the BTS: Grab from the airport is your fallback. Use airport WiFi, order from inside the terminal, then proceed to the official Grab pick-up point.
4. Khlong Saen Saep Canal Boat
Cuts across central Bangkok east-to-west through the canals. Fastest way to reach Pratunam market, Jim Thompson House, and the eastern areas of the old city.
The route is over 18 km long, served by 100 boats with 40β50 seats each, running from west to east through Bangkok. It connects major spots including Central World, Pratunam, Nana, and MBK. Over 60,000 passengers use it daily.
Key transfer point: The pier nearest to the Airport Rail Link is at ARL Ramkhamhaeng station.
Fares: Very cheap β confirm the current fare on-site, as it varies by pier (typically 9β19 THB per segment). Cash only. Hand money to the crew on the boat.
Reality check: This is a local commuter service. Expect splashing. The boats move fast and don’t wait long at piers. Step on quickly. Not ideal if you have large bags.
5. Chao Phraya River Boat
Runs north-south along the river. Essential for reaching the Grand Palace, Wat Arun, Wat Pho, and the old city area β none of which are directly served by BTS or MRT.
Connect to the river at Saphan Taksin BTS station (Silom Line terminus), which has a pier directly below.
Key piers:
- Maharaj / Tha Chang β Grand Palace, Wat Pho
- Phra Arthit β Khao San Road area, Khaosan backpacker district
- Asiatique Pier β Asiatique night market (shuttle boat, often free from Saphan Taksin)
Fares: Vary by flag/route (express boats vs. tourist boats). The Rabbit Card can be used on Chao Phraya river boats. Tourist boats charge a flat fare β confirm on-site as rates vary by operator.
Operating hours: Generally 6:00 AM to around 7:00β8:00 PM for regular express boats. Confirm last boat times at the pier, especially if returning in the evening.
6. Grab & Metered Taxi β Fallback Options
For areas with no rail coverage (Khao San Road, Lat Phrao, many residential sois) and for late-night travel after trains stop.
Grab works throughout Bangkok. Order from the app β price is fixed before you confirm. No haggling. Link a credit card for ease.
Metered taxis are plentiful. The meter starts at 35 THB. Always insist the driver turns on the meter. If a driver refuses or quotes a flat price upfront, get out and take the next one.

Tuk-tuks: Scenic for short tourist hops but rarely cost-effective. Always agree on price upfront. They are not metered and tourist prices are significantly inflated.
Zone-by-Zone Decisions
| Area | Best Mode |
|---|---|
| Sukhumvit, Siam, Silom, Asok | BTS Skytrain |
| Chatuchak Weekend Market | BTS Mo Chit or MRT Chatuchak |
| Chinatown (Yaowarat) | MRT Wat Mangkon |
| Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Wat Arun | Chao Phraya River Boat (from Saphan Taksin BTS) |
| Khao San Road | Chao Phraya boat to Phra Arthit pier, or Grab |
| Pratunam Market, MBK | Khlong Saen Saep canal boat or BTS National Stadium |
| Suvarnabhumi Airport β City | Airport Rail Link |
| Don Mueang Airport (DMK) | SRT Red Line (confirm current status) or Grab |
Card Summary β What to Get
| Card | Cost | Use on |
|---|---|---|
| Rabbit Card | 200 THB (100 deposit + 100 value) | BTS all lines, MRT Pink/Yellow, BRT, Chao Phraya boats |
| Contactless credit/debit card | Free | MRT Blue/Purple, Airport Rail Link |
| Single-journey tokens | Per trip | BTS, MRT (from vending machines) |
There is currently no single card that covers every system. You will need your Rabbit Card for BTS and your contactless bank card for MRT. Accept this before you arrive β it saves frustration.
Common Mistakes That Cost People Time and Money
- Taking a taxi from Suvarnabhumi Airport without knowing the meter should be running. Always confirm “meter on” before the car moves.
- Assuming one card works everywhere β Rabbit Card does not work on MRT Blue Line. Contactless bank cards do not work on BTS.
- Arriving at BTS ticket machines without coins or small bills β machines accept coins and small notes only. Get change at 7-Eleven before you queue.
- Trying to reach the Grand Palace via BTS alone β there is no BTS or MRT stop at the Grand Palace. You must use the river boat or Grab.
- Missing the last train β if you’re out late, aim to reach a station by 11:30 PM to catch the last train through central stations.
- Rush hour with luggage β avoid rush hours: 7:30β9:00 AM and 5:30β7:30 PM. Best for comfort is mid-morning (9:30β11:30 AM) or mid-afternoon (1:30β4:00 PM).
Return / Exit Planning
Back to Suvarnabhumi Airport: Take BTS to Phaya Thai station, transfer to Airport Rail Link. Last ARL train from Phaya Thai is around 11:30 PM β do not cut this close. Allow 45 minutes minimum from central Bangkok, 90 minutes if coming from the west side or dealing with luggage.
Don Mueang Airport (domestic hub): Not served by the ARL. The SRT Red Line connects but requires on-site confirmation of current schedule. Grab is your most reliable option β budget 45β90 minutes depending on traffic, longer during peak hours.
