The Ferry & RoRo Guide: Luzon to the Islands

Traveling by sea is different from a bus or train. It requires two things: Patience and a Terminal Fee.

The Batangas Grand Terminal

If you took a bus from Buendia-Taft or Cubao with a “Batangas Pier” sign, this is where you will end up.

  • Step 1: The Ticket Booth. Each shipping line (FastCat, Montenegro, Starlite, OceanJet) has its own window.
  • Step 2: The Terminal Fee. In 2026, the terminal fee is usually integrated into your ticket, but always keep around ₱30–₱50 in cash just in case.
  • Step 3: Security Check. Similar to an airport, your bags will go through an X-ray machine.

Choosing Your Vessel

  • FastCraft (OceanJet/SuperCat): These are passenger-only, high-speed catamarans.
  • Best for: Quick trips to Calapan or Puerto Galera (approx. 1 hour).
  • Vibe: Air-conditioned, airplane-style seating.
  • RoRo (Montenegro/Starlite): Large ships that carry both people and vehicles.
  • Best for: Long-haul trips or if you are bringing a car.
  • Vibe: Slower (2–3 hours to Calapan), but you can walk around the deck and enjoy the sea breeze.

The “RoRo” Logic l Bringing Your Vehicle

If you are driving your own car or motorcycle to the islands:

  • Arrive Early: Be at the pier at least 3 hours before departure.
  • Arrastre & Bill of Lading: You will need to pay for “Arrastre” (handling fees) and get a Bill of Lading. Keep your vehicle’s OR/CR ready.
  • Lashing: Once you drive onto the ship, crew members will “lash” (tie down) your vehicle to the floor so it doesn’t move during waves.

Sea Safety & Comfort

  • The “Coast Guard” Factor: In the Philippines, the Coast Guard can cancel trips instantly if there is a Gale Warning or a Signal No. 1 storm. Always check the weather 24 hours before your trip.

Passenger Amenities l 2026 Standards

  • Charging Stations: Modern ferries now have designated charging areas, but they are often crowded. Use your own Power Bank.
  • Food & Canteen: Most RoRos have a small canteen selling cup noodles, coffee, and snacks. Prices are higher than on land, so bringing your own “Baon” is a smart move.
  • The “Sunset Deck”: If you are on a RoRo, the top deck is the best place to be. It’s the “Utility-First” way to enjoy the view for free.

Always keep your Physical Ticket and ID in an easy-to-reach pocket. You will be asked to show them multiple times—at the terminal entrance, the terminal fee booth, and the ship’s boarding ramp.

⚠️ If you’re unfamiliar with the area, first-time in Manila, or want to understand how the system works before moving, you’ll get more value from PH Commute 101: First 24 Hours in Manila.
